St. John's wort is a perennial plant that has oval-shaped leaves and golden-yellow flowers. This plant has been used as an herbal remedy for many centuries. It is used to help heal wounds, as a balm for burns, a treatment of neuralgic conditions such as back pain, and also as a diuretic. A renewed interest in St. John's wort occurred during the past decade, and it is now a component of numerous herbal preparations for the treatment of anxiety and depression.
St John's Wort has historically been used to support a state of mental well-being. St John's wort, which blooms from June to September, is widely known as a herbal treatment for depression. In some countries, such as Germany, it is commonly prescribed for mild depression, especially in children, adolescents, and where cost is a concern.
Its two unique compounds, hypericin and hyperforin, are key to the extract's potent, beneficial effects. A constituent chemical, hyperforin, may be useful for treatment of alcoholism, although dosage, safety and efficacy have not been studied. Hyperforin has also been found to have antibacterial properties against gram-negative bacteria, although dosage, safety and efficacy has not been studied. However, hypericin,
one of the active pigments in St. John's Wort has the ability to
naturally support our brains serotonin production. As a result, it may
be beneficial in providing the balance needed to maintain a positive
mood naturally without side effects.
Studies show that people taking St. John's Wort experience natural mood elevation, promote emotional balance, encourage feelings of calmness, and reduce feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and often experience a better and healthy sleep patterns.
